Christmas, that is Christ's Mass, has largely been overwhelmed by consumerism. There is some nostalgia for what has been lost. We still like the occasional carol, but does this betoken a wider loss? That in losing hold of the meanings of the past we may lack the resources to construct a meaningful future?
