The only way to make sense of Jesus Christ as God is to think of God as a self-emptying god. So in a certain sense, to follow right through, we’re also called to some kind of kenosis, some kind of self-emptying.

Though there’s a very great paradox there, that from the self-emptying comes abundant life. It’s hard to get one’s mind around that, and a lot of people think, oh, that’s ridiculous. I can understand that! It’s … on the face of it, it does appear so. But there’s a powerful sense that some of us have that that’s what it’s about.
