Where does creativity fit within the flourishing human life?

“Creative” and “creativity” are perennially positive terms in today’s world. But to what extent are art and creativity essentials of human nature – and in what sense are they derived, historically and theologically, from the nature of God as creator?

Trevor Hart is a pastor and Honorary Professor at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. He has thought a lot about the relationship between faith and art, and was in Sydney to deliver the 2015 New College Lectures, “Taking Flesh: Christology, Embodiment and the Arts”. In this interview with Simon Smart, Professor Hart talks about God’s artistry, the human propensity for making things, and why we become frustrated when our lives offer no opportunity to engage creatively with the world.
